The Best Beaches in Italy

The travel site TripAdvisor recently presented its collection of the best beaches in Italy. But which Italian beach resort took the top spot?

The travel site TripAdvisor recently announced its Travelers’ Choice Awards for 2018 and, as a part of their ratings, they also ranked the best beaches in Italy. Here are the top five, and all are perfect Italy beach resorts for a sun-kissed holiday in 2018.

Spiaggia dei Conigli, Lampedusa

Sitting on the shores of Lampedusa in Sicily, Spiaggia dei Conigli took the top spot. Visitors to this Italy beach resort (known in English as Rabbit Beach) credited the soft sand and sparkling waters as being major reasons why they love this beach so much.

Contrary to its name, the beach is not over-run by wild rabbits and instead takes its name from the nearby island of the same name. Funnily enough, the name is believed to be due to a translation error. As ancient texts call it “Rabit Island”, using the Arabic word “rabit” meaning “connection” and referring to the narrow stretch of land between the islet and coast.

Lampedusa is one of the Italian Pelagie Islands in the Mediterranean Sea and is a popular Italy beach resort for a holiday soaking up the sun.

Tropea Beach, Calabria

In second place is Tropea Beach in the Italian region of Calabria. Visitors are often impressed with this beach’s romantic atmosphere, featuring stunning sea views surrounded by lush Mediterranean landscape.

Tropea itself is a small town known for its historic centre, featuring a 12th-century Cathedral built on the ruins of a Byzantine cemetery. With cultural attractions close to pretty beaches, this is the perfect Italy beach resort for a diverse holiday mixing coastal relaxation with time discovering South Italy’s intriguing culture.

La Pelosa, Sardinia

Third place on this list of the best beaches in Italy takes us to the island of Sardinia – a popular holiday destination for an Italy beach vacation. La Pelosa is a famous beach in Stintino credited with white sand and a crystal clear, turquoise sea that lulls visitors into a state of complete bliss, making La Pelosa the ideal choice for a rejuventating Italy beach holiday.

The beach is especially good if you want to enjoy tranquil water sports, such as snorkeling, diving or kayaking, and it is also suitable for families with children as it has a range of facilities, including parking and restaurants.

Cala Goloritzè, Sardinia

Fourth position is taken by another famous Sardinian beach, Cala Goloritzé, which was named an Italian National Monument in 1995. This beach is located in Baunei, in the southern part of the Gulf of Orosei (Nuoro). TripAdvisor commenters acknowledged Cala Goloritzè as “the most beautiful beach in Italy” thanks to its untouched landscape and soft sand. However, it is not the most easy to reach. To enjoy the beach, you must take a rather long footpath from the road – but believe us when we say that it is worth it!

Porto Giunco, Sardinia

The final place on TripAdvisor’s top five best beaches in Italy is taken by Porto Giunco in the splendid Villasimius, which sits in the province of Cagliari. It is one of Sardinia’s most popular summer holiday resorts. Reflecting on their experience, one TripAdvisor commenter said “the sand is so fine that it seems like flour and the rock pools are as fascinating as the sea.”

The beaches of Villasimius are also an excellent choice if you want to discover rare sealife and Mediterranean birds. This Southeast Sardinian town is home to the Marine Protected Area Capo Carbonara, which has barracuda, seagrass meadows and dive sites, as well as the Stagno di Notteri lagoon, where you will find migrating flamingos in the winter.
