Discover Japanese Architecture in Italy

Between tradition and innovation, the architecture of the Japanese tells the story of an entire culture.

A new exhibition co-organised by the Japan Foundation celebrating Japanese architecture is on display in central Rome at MAXXI (National Museum of XXI Century Arts).

The exhibition has been edited by Pippo Ciorra in collaboration with Kenjiro Hosaka (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo) and Florence Ostende (Barbican Centre, London), with Yoshiharu Tsukamoto (Atelier Bow-Wow / Tokyo Institute of Technology) acting as the chief adviser. It features the work of famous architects, such as Kenzo Tange, Toyo Ito, Kazuyo Sejima and Shigeru Ban, as well as up-and-coming architectural artists, with pieces describing the tradition of Japanese architecture and its constant evolution and innovation.

One of the beautiful things about this exhibition in Rome is the way it presents the essential aspects of Japanese culture, revealing the importance of harmony between man, architecture and the environment through drawings, models, vintage and contemporary photographs, videos and full-scale reproductions of building fragments.

The exhibition will be on display at MAXXI in Rome from November 9th 2016 until 26th February 2017.
