The eighth wonder of the world comes to Italy in the form of a new Naples exhibition this winter season. An exhibit of the “Terracotta Army and First Emperor of China”, a world-famous historical finding, will be available to view in the city of Naples. Running until January 28, 2018, the exhibition will be viewable at the Basilica of the Holy Spirit on Via Toledo.
The Basilica of the Holy Spirit was selected as the location for the Terracotta Army in an effort to marry the symbols of Catholic spirituality and culture with the sacred strength of China’s terracotta mausoleums. The this bold connection between the city of Naples and ancient China serves to amalgamate the relationship between these two cultures.
First discovered in China over 2200 years ago, the Terracotta Army represented a complete excavation of a Chinese necropolis. The Terracotta Army has over 300 reproduced statues: around 170 soldiers, wagons, weapons and miscellaneous objects.
The Terracotta Army was first uncovered in the central Chinese province of Shaanxi, buried in the capital city of Xi’an. The Army is part of the Emperor’s mausoleum, and all the statues, weapons, armours, warships, pottery and objects recall the daily life of ancient China. Over the years, the Terracotta Army has received careful restoration at the hands of skilled Chinese craftsmen.
The new exhibition in Naples provides an engaging experience by illuminating the statues with light installations, and audio–visual inserts are provided to create an immersive experience. There are also video projections on giant screens, audio guides and an interactive area all contributing to the captivating atmosphere.
“The choice of Naples to exhibit the great international exhibition of the Terracotta Army and the First Emperor is based on important cultural affinities,” said Fabio Di Gioia, curator of the exhibition.
